The Deutsche Oper Berlin production of Puccinis
Manon Lescaut at the Royal Oper House Muscat (ROHM) was marked by a very
memorable performance.
The opera, which originally premiered in 1893, tells the story of Manon, young
woman who falls in love with a poor student, Des Grieux.

But she soon leaves
him in favour of the rich old Geronte, who can provide her with jewels and
beautiful gowns.

Manon doesn't love Geronte and when Des Grieux reappears, she
decides to leave with him, but is caught stealing jewels on her way out and
thrown in jail. Then sent on a convict ship to Louisianna.

Des Griux begs for
passageanon on the ship so he can be with her, but once in Louisiana the
couple finmds that even their love can save them from poverty and death.

Conducted by the passionate Italian maestro Roberto Rizzi -Brignoli, the
orchestra, cast and chorus evoked the deepest emotions and took the audiance
on a journey, beginning with a light, fun two acts, with moments of comedy and
fun, such as when Manon mooks the ridiculous old Geronte, a role
perfectly by aMERICane bass-baritone Stephen Bronk, and then into a darker second half hen
love is put to the test.
The drama on stage was set against sparse, minimalist white sets and gorgeous
period costumes which let the characters and music shine.
Chines soprano Hui He, in the lead role of Manon, was truly fantastic! There
are many great opera singers but not all of them have brilliant acting
abilities to match. Hui He has both a dynamic, vibrato-filles voice which made
Puccini's difficult arias seem effortless, and the stage persence, facial
expression and body language to match.
As Manon, she was initially innocent and romantic, then became noticeably
trapped in a loveless situation with Geronte. When in jail and preparing
the board the ship to Louisiana, and then dying in the wilderness, the anguish
and heartbreak were so palpable that Hui He could make the audiance feel
Manon's pain, too. Hers was a performance that should set a standard for opeera
excellence.
Singing the role of Des Griuex to Hui He's Manon was Bulgarian tenor Kamen
Chanev, who was also very strong. His big, bold voice was a beautiful complement to
Hui He's powerful soprano, and their chemistry on stage resulted in a very convincing love story. Though not quite a capitivating as Manon, Chanev's Des
Grieux was certainly dramatic and sympathic.
Puccini's Manon Lescaut may not be as well known in Oman as his other big operas
like Turandot, La Boheme and Madama Butterfly but following this passionate
production, it won't soon be forgotton.
